Oxford Development Abroad is a student-run charity that works to harness the energy, enthusiasm and resources of the Oxford student body to assist with small-scale, community-initiated development projects in the developing world. We have been a registered charity in the UK since 2002, number 1093945.
Since 2002, we have been connecting students with small-scale, community-initiated development projects in developing countries. This year, we are recruiting volunteers for projects in Bolivia, Uganda and Nepal. We have long-standing partnerships with in-country NGOs to be able to offer health, sanitation and education-based construction projects in these countries. We have a dedicated committee that work with you for two terms of comprehensive training, fundraising and preparation so that you are ready for the experience of a lifetime in the summer!
Whilst education and research are of paramount importance, they are no substitute for actually doing something. The phrase ‘to learn by doing’ is a perfect summary of our work. Many past volunteers have gone on to study development-related topics at undergraduate and graduate level, and to embark on careers with research institutions and other organisations engaged actively in attempting to address the wider issues in development; paths that they would not perhaps have followed were it not for involvement with ODA. But more than that; the projects run by ODA make a tremendous difference to the small communities in which they operate. For example, the construction of a classroom or a latrine may allow the previously marginalised to receive an education.
